Who is a cost estimate engineer? This profession falls into the category of those specialists who are responsible for determining the full cost of construction. Estimating engineers must engage in theoretical and practical activities on such issues as estimated standardization, pricing, organization of various competitions and auctions.

The charter of the all-Russian trade union of cost estimate compilers of the Russian Federation states that an estimate engineer is a specialist in determining all types of construction work. The main thing in this work is that the specialist must understand not only the main issue, but also have accounting skills and knowledge in the field of construction.

Since educational institutions of secondary vocational education for this profession, included in the ETKS in 2008, have not yet developed training programs, often on the basis of higher technical educational institutions there are courses in estimating, after which students are issued certificates established by the state. Typically, engineers and technicians or economists from construction organizations take such courses. Since not only the ability to correctly make estimate calculations and have an understanding of the specifics of the work is especially valued, but also to have experience in the construction industry.

However, such courses are sometimes not enough to thoroughly study costing in construction: a self-instruction manual is the surest way out of this situation.

Study of estimates

Preparation of estimates includes the activity of estimating the cost of work in the construction industry and is one of the main initial stages of performing construction and installation work. Each construction project has an integral part of the estimate, which contains all, without exception, information about the full cost of construction - from the initial price of building materials and the costs of their transportation and storage to the justification of all costs associated with putting the newly built facility into operation and landscaping the surrounding areas.

However, drawing up an estimate is not an easy task, since the estimator must carry out his work based on a minimum of information, as a rule, this is a description of the equipment, a drawing and the main structural elements of the entire construction. In the work of an estimator, both special computer programs and estimate and normative reference books, which contain standards and prices, can provide great assistance.

One of the main ways to obtain a qualification as a cost estimate engineer practically free of charge is, as we have already said, self-training.

As a rule, learning to prepare estimates for almost all teaching aids consists of three stages:

  • Introduction to the concept of “estimating in construction”.
  • Studying the rules for drawing up construction estimates.
  • Familiarity with the processes and rules of pricing in the Russian Federation.

The result of the training will be comprehension of the basics of a respected and necessary construction profession - the profession of cost estimate engineer.

Which tutorial should you choose?

In order to start studying budgeting, you will need specific literature that will help you understand the nuances of the profession.

The following list presents the most popular and useful Russian publications, the study of the material of which can provide significant assistance to a beginning budget preparer. Each book Estimating in Construction from the list has a download link.

TOP 10 self-instruction books for estimating:

  1. Self-instruction manual on estimating in construction (author V.D. Ardzinov). The construction industry is an area in which you can earn a good income in any economic situation in the country. Even during the crisis, the construction of houses, administrative buildings, shopping centers, industrial and infrastructure facilities continues. There is a constant shortage of qualified specialists in this industry, so finding work is quite easy. At first glance, construction professions involve heavy physical labor, and this creates certain restrictions for anyone who strives to earn a decent salary, but cannot boast of suitable physical characteristics.

However, there is a place in this field for knowledge workers too! For example, the profession of an estimator does not have such restrictions - women, older people, or simply not prone to heavy physical activity can realize their potential in it. At the same time, the salary level is quite high even at the initial stage, and specialists who know how to draw up documentation and conduct cost estimates are in demand even with a basic level of training.

Professional responsibilities of estimators

An estimator is a specialist whose responsibilities include calculating the cost of construction, repair, and restoration work at the project stage and drawing up the relevant estimate documents in accordance with SNiP and GOST standards. The estimator’s task is also to optimize costs and negotiate contract prices for various types of work with contractors. The estimator also takes into account the cost of wages for hired workers, the cost of building materials, transportation and other expenses and creates a consolidated estimate for the project, laying down profit margins taking into account all factors and the available budget.

The responsibilities of an estimate specialist may include the following tasks:

  • Calculation and coordination of costs for construction and installation work;
  • Determination of the actual scope of work based on technical documentation;
  • Estimation of costs at all stages of construction and commissioning of the facility;
  • Monitoring and calculating prices for the purchase of materials and construction equipment;
  • Preparation of price proposals under contract agreements;
  • Preparation of estimate and design documentation, accumulative statements, materials write-off acts, work acceptance certificates;
  • Work with tender documentation;
  • Feasibility study of costs;
  • Examination of contractors' estimates;
  • Drawing up and monitoring the signing of work completion certificates.

How much does an estimator earn in Moscow and the region?

The salary range varies from 26,200 to 92,800 rubles. The head of the estimate department receives an average of 100,000 rubles.

Requirements for professional training of estimators

The profession of an estimator requires knowledge of the basics of economics, an understanding of technological processes and the structure of work in the company. At the same time, higher education in the field of economics or construction is desirable, but is not a strictly mandatory requirement. For the position of assistant estimator, employers are ready to accept applicants without experience on an internship basis of 3 months or more.

The following skills will be an advantage when applying for a job as an estimator:

  • Knowledge of estimate and normative bases (GESN, FER, Moscow estimate and normative base TSN-2001;
  • Ideas about technologies of construction and repair work;
  • Knowledge of modern GOST standards and SNiP standards;
  • Ability to read drawings and technical documentation;
  • Ability to draw up local, facility, resource, summary estimates, statements of quantities, subcontracting and other acts (forms KS-2, KS-3, KS-6a, M-29) and other types of estimate and design documentation;
  • Knowledge of MS Excel;
  • Ability to work in software systems to automate cost estimates (Grand-Smeta, Smeta.ru, RIK).

How to master the Grand-Smeta complex

"Grand-Estimates" is a software package for estimating engineers, developed by the Grand group of companies with the aim of automating estimate calculations, filling out acts and various forms of estimate document flow. The complex contains the main cost estimates and normative bases approved by the State Construction Committee of the Russian Federation.

It is not difficult for practicing estimators to understand the operation of the program - they understand all the terms, names of forms and tasks. Therefore, they just need to carefully study the menu, toolbar and directories, and then practice drawing up estimates and documents with the substitution of indices, variables, identifiers, norms and prices from the required database.

If you do not have basic knowledge of estimating or sufficient work experience, it is almost impossible to master the Grand Estimate program on your own - a lack of understanding of the terminology and purpose of certain tools is a serious obstacle. Therefore, novice estimators are recommended to study the program simultaneously with the theoretical foundations of estimate and design calculations.

Where are they trained to be an estimator?

At the moment, universities do not teach the specialty of estimator, however, there are programs in the direction of “Economics in Construction”. Construction, technical or engineering education will be an advantage. Having a higher or secondary specialized vocational education, you can complete short-term courses for estimators and start working as an assistant or trainee in a construction company or estimating and contracting organization.

Effective cost estimating courses in Moscow are held at the “101 Course” training center, which has been specializing in training workers in the construction industry for many years:

The advantage of this curriculum is the opportunity to master a prestigious profession from scratch in 18 lessons, balanced theory and analysis of practical problems, as well as assistance to graduates with official employment in Moscow.

The practice of drawing up estimate documentation in construction in “Smeta.ru” and “GRAND-Smeta”

Specialists of the TechnoProgress Vocational Education Center have developed a training course to reinforce practical skills in drawing up different types of estimates in the Smeta.ru and GRAND-Estimates programs, and their most effective use in the professional activities of students.

Competent teachers will talk about changes in the legislative framework of the Russian Federation, and also, in addition to popular ones, will consider the nuances of specific calculations: drawing up estimates for commissioning work; drawing up estimates for the reconstruction of buildings; drawing up estimates for the installation of fire safety systems and video surveillance; drawing up estimates for low-current systems, etc. The teacher will show all examples using two programs at once.

The course on preparing estimates for commissioning work, as well as courses on other highly specialized calculations, are very relevant today. Our teachers will tell you about typical mistakes and help you understand the many subtleties when preparing such estimates using the Smeta.ru and GRAND-Estimates programs. If students have questions about territorial estimate bases that are used specifically in their region, experienced teachers will answer them clearly and in detail.

All training, including the course on preparing estimates for low-current systems, is conducted at a very intensive pace; more than 70% of the training time, students independently create estimates
